For some, Bonfire Night is an exciting time of celebration, but for others, it is a time of stress and worry for the well-being of their pets.

Here at Pennine Veterinary, we want the occasion to be less worrisome, therefore we have provided essential strategies to help keep your beloved animals calm and comfortable when the fireworks start to light up the sky.

  • Create a Safe Space:

By designating a quiet, comfortable space where your pets can retreat to when the fireworks begin, it will provide a sense of security and help reduce anxiety.

  • Use Calming Methods:

To reassure your pets, you can play Classical Music, used by many pet owners, to create a more soothing environment, and distracting them from the noise of the fireworks.

  • Make Positive Associations:

Use methods of positive reinforcement by treating your pets when a firework is set off to encourage a mor positive association with the loud disturbance.

  • Implement Enrichment:

Distractions are key, so allow your pets to engage in positive interactions, with toys, games, or even rewarding training.

  • Herbal Remedies:

You could also consider talking to your vet about pheromone diffusers, commonly used to relax and soothe anxiety during periods of stress. Or, in some cases, your vet may even prescribe medication. Always confirm with a veterinary professional before administering anything to your pets.

  • Outside Pets:

Consider bringing your outdoor furry friends to an inside area. This could limit the amount of sound that they are exposed to, helping to reduce anxiety.

Don’t forget, you are not alone in this. Over half of UK dogs show fear when they hear fireworks, not forgetting about all other types of pets.

Pennine veterinary wishes you a safe, joyful, but less stressful season for both you and your pets.
